Content Creators vs. God's Word

Luke Schumacher

“Teach me your decrees, O Lord; I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness.” - Psalm 119: 33-40 NLT

Did you start reading this after checking TikTok, Instagram, or another social media channel?

Content creators and influencers are constantly wanting our attention. From lifestyle Instagram influencers to self-proclaimed LinkedIn gurus, there is no shortage of content.

However, there is a problem with it. Or, it’s more of a problem with us.

Sometimes we view these as gospel truth. Even with Christian content creators we may believe them because they are “Christian.”

But there are many who don’t share the Gospel in its context. This can lead us down shameful paths and away from God.

Today’s Psalm 119 verses help us recenter our hearts around God’s Word. We should desire God’s Word for many reasons, and I want to share 3 that I’ve learned.

1. Only Through God can We “Abandon Our Shameful Ways”

Verse 39: Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good.

The psalmist is desperate for God’s Word. We should be too. It’s only through His Word that we can abandon our shameful way. It’s only through God we can “be a good person” or renew our lives.

2. Go to God’s Word, Not Guru’s Social Media Posts

Verse 37: Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.

No matter what, the psalmist knows he needs God’s word to thrive. He knows that Scripture is where we find peace and rejuvenation for our souls. Everything good is in His Word.

Do some content creators offer great advice? Sure. But should we look to them first? No.

3. Mini Prayers

Verse 34: Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart.

Treat each section of Psalm 119 like a mini prayer. As you continue this devotional, when a particular section resonates with you, try to memorize it. Write it down. Stop and pray.

You don’t need long winded prayers. Simply a few verses from this stanza will facilitate a conversation with God.

Journal Reflection:

Pray using this stanza and pause for the Lord to speak. Read verses 33-40 out loud and pray for that same desire for God’s Word.
