2 Powerful "If... Then..." Facts About God | Psalm 119 Bible Study

Luke Schumacher

Psalm 119: 121 - 128 (NLT)

”Don’t leave me to the mercy of my enemies, for I have done what is just and right. Please guarantee a blessing for me. Don’t let the arrogant oppress me! My eyes strain to see your rescue, to see the truth of your promise fulfilled. I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love, and teach me your decrees. Give discernment to me, your servant; then I will understand your laws. Lord, it is time for you to act, for these evil people have violated your instructions. Truly, I love your commands more than gold, even the finest gold. Each of your commandments is right. That is why I hate every false way.”

Do you remember taking science classes in grade school?

The first week or two was always about the same thing: the scientific method. (honestly I forgot about it until I was thinking of how to start this entry).

I found that there was always an emphasis on the Hypothesis stage. When forming it, you would typically use an “If… Then…” statement.

Much of this psalm is also structured this way. We talked about that on day 1.

If It’s In God’s Word, Then it’s Important

V. 128: Each of your commandments is right. That is why I hate every false way.

God is intentional. You can see it in the Genesis creation account. You can see it in the prophets. You see it in Jesus. The Bible is a culmination of all of it, so you can bet that if something is in it, it’s important.

That’s why I like v. 128. The psalmist knows the commands are right. He hates every false way. Why? Because he understands the importance of God’s Word.

Just because something isn’t directly stated doesn’t mean it’s wrong or evil. It’s just not of the utmost importance.

If God Promises It, Then He’ll Fulfill that Promise. Always.

V. 123: My eyes strain to see your rescue, to see the truth of your promise fulfilled.

We don’t serve a God who is lazy and half-hearted. He makes promises and He keeps them. Will it be on our timeline? Hardly ever. Will it be fulfilled? Always.

You may have difficulty understanding when God will do what he said. You might be struggling right now. It might take time. Your eyes might strain and your heart might waver. But don’t let these lies turn into beliefs.

The enemy always wants us to do our own thing instead of trust God’s Promises. Trust that if God promises it that it will be fulfilled.
